Finding employment for an ex-offender is very challenging. Let me restate that. Finding decent employment for an ex-offender is very challenging. I know this all too well. Before I was incarcerated, I made a great living selling insurance. My reckless living and horrible decisions caused me to lose my freedom. While incarcerated people told me that it would be hard to find employment, but I didn’t know it would be this hard. It was a long, hard, and humiliating road to get where I am now. Free!!
I hope this information leads to you getting back on your feet. If you need any help, leave me a comment and I’ll do my best to provide you with the guidance you need.
The first thing you have to come to grips with is most companies do a background check. Most background checks are done by online companies that check public records to determine your criminal history. The company doing the background check does not have a decision on if you are hired. They are a third party hired by your potential employer to gather information about you and report back to the employer.
Most reports go back 7 years, and for the majority of companies, they do not want you to have any felony convictions. Some companies will hire you with prior felonies, but for the most part, most will not.
I suggest doing a background check on yourself, to know in advance, what may be hindering you. Also, this may inform you of any erroneous information present that requires being removed by the courts.
Local And Small Businesses
Small, local businesses may offer the best chance of you finding employment as they are less likely to run a background check. They are also more likely to give you a second chance to prove yourself, which is all you are asking for anyway. Small businesses will be more apt to pay you a little more than the companies on the list because they probably will need and value your talents and expertise.
Don’t wait until you see the “help wanted” sign. If you have a particular skill set don’t be afraid to go to the businesses that are in your trade and ask if they are looking for someone with your abilities. Use this introduction to promote yourself.
Better Way To Make A Living.
When I started looking for a job, I was excited to return to the workforce.
What I was not prepared for was the lack of decent job opportunities willing to give me a second chance. Even menial jobs that I felt were below my capabilities and talents would not even hire me.
That turned out to be the best thing that could have happened because it forced me to work for myself. This was my introduction to affiliate marketing. No, I’m not rich or drive a Lamborghini, but I work my own hours and pay my bills.
