Jobs For Felons – 8 Tips To Landing The Job You Want

I never knew a felony on your record could make it almost impossible to find decent employment. The system we live in is not designed for a person to make amends for past mistakes. Most people who committed a crime have a desire to leave that life behind them and be a productive member of society.

The pressures of life along with not having a strong support system hinders a person from getting back on their feet. That’s why I created Make A Change Affiliates to assist individuals looking to find a job. I hope these tips help you find the job you’ve been searching for.

Tip 1 – Have Mental Resolve

The first piece of advice I would give you is to keep your head up. If you go into a situation knowing what is ahead of you that will allow you not to be discouraged when things look bleak. Understand that this is going to be a rough road ahead, You will get through this time in your life like you have all the others.

So stay encourage and don’t let frustration deter you.

Tip 2 – Get  A Good Resume

Today’s hiring process has changed dramatically over that last 10 years. Everyone is either using a recruiter or hiring through the internet. The days of walking past a store and taking the “we’re hiring” poster out of the window are gone. Writing a resume can be a frightening task. Trying to figure out what goes where can be nerve wrecking. But you can do it.

Make sure you don’t leave gaps in your employment history. Sometimes it can’t be avoided. but don’t forget the work you did while incarcerated. Most ex-inmates forget that while they were away they worked as head cooks, line prep, janitorial, administration and a host of other jobs, Employers who will hire someone with a past conviction will also take into consideration what skills you learned while incarcerated.

Use a resume app if at all possible. Even if you are good at resume writing, one of the downloadable apps will help keep everything streamlined and in the right format. A resume writing service is even better. They will be able to write a professional looking resume that will potentially get you more interest from potential employers.

Tip 3 – Own At least One Nice Outfit

If you get a call for an interview you want to be prepared in advance. The saying is true, “you act like you feel”. You don’t have to wear a tie to an interview anymore, but you want to be presentable. You can find a nice pair of pants and a nice shirt from a second hand or thrift store. Looking good for an interview doesn’t have to be expensive. However first impressions still mean a lot. Especially when you are starting two steps behind, to begin with.

Tip 4 – Be Honest If Asked About Your Criminal History

There is no reason to withhold the information about your past. Background checks are done by third parties and usually don’t miss anything. Also, you don’t want something showing up that you didn’t prepare a potential employer in advance.

Tip 5 – Don’t Be Too Picky

If you are offered a job, even if it is something you don’t want right now, take it. You can always use the job as a reference for any other opportunities you may get later on.

Tip 6 – Don’t Give Up.

Whatever you do, don’t give up. Keep looking, keep sending out resumes, and keep asking whos hiring. There is an employer out there willing to hire you. You just have to be persistent. With the tips, you have learned and the determination you have, something will come through.

Tip 7 – Watch Your Socia Media

Companies are not only running background checks they are also checking your social feeds. You want to make sure you don’t have any derogatory images or offensive language on your social networks. Employers are very keen on the information highway nowadays.

Tip 8 – Think About Starting Your Own Business

This is my all-time personal favorite start your own business. You probably think that is not possible or realistic. But some of the most successful businesses were started because they had no other choice.

Some business doesn’t require a lot of capital to get started. You can start your own landscaping business, mobile detailing, home improvement, and many others. The internet has level the playing field for a startup business.

Look into starting an online business. There are millions of people online right now making some kind of purchase online. Just think if you could tap into that market. It is not as hard as you think. That is how I got started in affiliate marketing (read my story).

No matter what happens we are here with you. If there are other tips you guys can think of please leave them in the comments below.
